A warm welcome despite the snow
On Sunday 10th December the Town Mayor of Thatcham, Councillor Ellen Crumly, hosted the annual Civic Carol Service at St Mary’s Church. The overnight snowfall and continuing low temperatures did see a reduction in the number of visitors. Those who did brave the elements were rewarded with joyful singing from the church choir and delightful performances from the Barfield Handbell Ringers. These were combined with traditional prayers lead by Revd Mark Bennet and bible readings, read by the Mayor; her Deputy Mayor, Cllr Jan Cover; her Escort, Cllr Richard Crumly; Pierce Jones, Deputy Head Boy at Trinity School; Revd Brenda Harland; David Ball, The Rosemary Appeal; and Patsy Stone, Young People and Children First.
Shortly before the service the Mayor presented prizes to the three winners of her Christmas card competition – Christina Cruse, Naomi Bennet and Evan Alderman. The collection during the service will be given to the The Rosemary Appeal and Young People and Children First which are the Mayor’s Charities for 2017-18, a total of £259.76 was donated.
In her closing remarks the Mayor asked us all to think of others at this time of year and talked “of coming together to support each other and to celebrate together”.
