AT 10am on Monday 12th March, Thatcham Town Council joined over 1000 local authorities and organisations across the UK and overseas in celebrating Commonwealth Day with the raising of the Commonwealth flag to celebrate the Commonwealth and its values of friendship and co-operation with fellow Commonwealth young and old citizens around the world.
The ceremony, held at the Council Offices in Brownsfield Road, was led by the Town Mayor, Councillor Ellen Crumly who welcomed pupils from Spurcroft Primary School and Whitelands Park Primary School, Vice Chairman of West Berkshire Council Cllr Carol Jackson-Doerge, community representatives and Councillors & Staff of Thatcham Town Council. The group gathered around the flag pole and after a welcome from The Mayor, Deputy Mayor Cllr Jan Cover read a message from Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations the Right Honourable Patricia Scotland QC. Just before 10am Madam Mayor read the Commonwealth Affirmation, then the children commenced a countdown from 30 and the flag was raised at exactly 10am to coincide with the other organisations across the UK and beyond.
The Mayor then invited the attendees into the Chamber for refreshments where the children proudly showed her the Commonwealth flags that they had specially designed and created for the event. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor then presented each child that attended with a commemorative certificate and Commonwealth badge.
Cllr Crumly, said “More than 60% of the 2.5 billion citizens of The Commonwealth are under 30 years of age. The Commonwealth acknowledges the importance of young people across their member countries and so it was wonderful to share this important day with pupils from Spurcroft Primary School and Whitelands Park Primary School who are our future leaders and who will be responsible for promoting the Commonwealth values in the future.”
