Warming up for Christmas is the weekend when Thatcham Town starts the festive countdown to Christmas.
Thatcham Christmas Lights Switch -On is on Friday 6th December with activity from 5.00-8.00pm and the lights switched on at 7.00pm. This year some of the traditional content for the very young has been moved to Saturday into a new event called Festive Family Fun which will take place on The Broadway from 10.00am-4.00pm. On Sunday, Thatcham Rotary and District organise The Great Thatcham Santa Fun Run with activity starting from 11.00am.
We are pleased to announce we have a sponsor for The Christmas Lights Switch-On AND Festive Family Fun day, McCarthy and Stone whose sponsorship have enabled us to bring some additional attractions to the festivities. Highlights will be new lights around the Broadway. Our Christmas Tree will be sparkling, supported by Oakley Green Conservatories and both sides of The Broadway closed to traffic from 1.00pm for increased safety and enjoyment on the night. A brand new solar powered stage with a covers band The Doolallys (ex The Dooleys) will be playing festive songs after the light switch on until 8.00pm. And of course, Santa will be making a rare appearance!
On the Broadway and around Town there will be Kennet Radio, Santa and Sleigh (presented by Newbury and District Lions), Treasure Hunt, Steam Engine and Festive stalls and refreshments from communities around Thatcham. Look out and help us pick Thatcham business and retailers best dressed window display as this year, in addition to The Mayor’s favourite (which will be announced in the evening of the switch-on), there will be ‘The Peoples Window’ with the public able to vote for their favourite window display and the winning display announced in The Newbury Weekly News on Thursday December 12th. The carpark at The Kingsland Centre will be free for the day thanks to West Berkshire Council. Festive Family Fun on Saturday 7th is turning out to be a do not miss this day for families with a host of stage entertainment and other attractions including : -Cold Ash Brass Band -West Berkshire Rock Choir -Primary School choirs of Thatcham Park and Whiteland’s Park -Ruddock Academy of Irish Dance -Jolly Pop’s Snow Sisters singing songs from the latest musicals There will also be a Christmas Grotto, Festive Farm, Children’s fun fair rides and Community Stalls. Thatcham Town Council have also arranged for free car-parking all day at The Kingsland Centre Carpark to support local businesses and Festive Family Fun day. On Sunday, The Great Thatcham Santa Run (organised by Thatcham and District Rotary Club) starts at 11.00am when around 250 people raise money for charity by running in festive Santa attire.
