Thatcham Family Fun Day 2017
Sunday 25th June 2017, Henwick Worthy Sports Ground
It was a windy but dry day as the annual Thatcham Family Fun Day organised by Thatcham Town Council returned to Henwick Worthy Sports Ground.
The day was packed with activities and demonstrations and highlights included Thatcham Rotary Club’s Car Show which had a broad selection of vintage and modern vehicles that paraded around the site. There were also lots of demonstrations from local sports groups such as Thatcham Rugby Club and Matt Fiddes Martial Arts and Thatcham Tornadoes challenged members of the public with their speed shot competition raising money for the Mayors nominated charities.
The Mayors Charity Dog Show raised £93 for her nominated charities of The Rosemary Appeal and Young People and Children First and saw over 40 dogs entering across 10 categories. Ultimate Best in Show was won by Cameron a beautiful English setter and prizes were generously donated by the National Animal Welfare Trust with judging provided by Newbury Ringcraft.
Cllr Ellen Crumly, Town Mayor of Thatcham raised £174 for her charities with her lucky envelope game which she is delighted about and whilst speaking on Kennet Radio complimented Thatcham on its great “community spirit.” Another group raising money for the Mayor’s charities was Newbury & District Hackspace who had built a roving Dalek for the event and asked for contributions to have your photo taken with it raising over £28.
Local running group Hi-5 Runners organised the Fun Run for the first time and races included the 100m toddler dash, 1km fun run and the ever popular Mascot Race. Thatcham Town Council’s mascot Cyril the Squirrel was busy hi-fiving the crowd and subsequently came last! Proceeds from the Fun Run will be donated to local charity Swings & Smiles.
The field was packed with a huge variety of stalls from local charities, schools, craft sellers plus well-known brands. 2nd Thatcham Scouts provided the BBQ and the Royal British Legion provided the tea tent.
There was plenty of entertainment for the children with Pelhams Funfair, Go Kart Party and Dazzlin Events nerf guns and local enthusiasts offered rides around the site on their model traction engines.
Kennet Radio kindly provided the commentary for the day and Thatcham Photographic Club who provided the photography, also ran their own charity raffle raising money for The Rosemary Appeal.
Thatcham Town Council’s next free, family event will be Fun on the Broadway on Thursday 31st August between 10am and 3pm.
